Algebra, chapter V, § 11. Abelian extensions

Let GG be a cyclic group of order nn and let dd be a divisor of nn. Then the number of elements of order dd in GG is equal to φ(d)\varphi(d). In particular, φ(n)\varphi(n) is the number of generators of GG.

Since GG is isomorphic to Z/nZ\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z}, the number of generators of GG is equal to φ(n)\varphi(n) by Prop. 3. Let gg be a generator of GG; then the elements hh of GG such that hd=1h^d = 1 constitute the subgroup HH of GG generated by gn/dg^{n/d}; this group is cyclic of order dd and the elements of order dd of GG are the generators of HH, hence their number is φ(d)\varphi(d).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
