Algebra, chapter V, § 11. Abelian extensions
— Let be an algebraic closure of and let be an integer.
a) The cyclotomic polynomial is irreducible in .
b) The degree of over is .
c) The homomorphism of into is surjective and defines by passage to quotients an isomorphism of onto .
Taking account of Prop. 6, we need only prove c). Every integer prime to is a product of prime numbers not dividing ; so it is enough to show that for every prime number not dividing , the mapping of into itself extends to an automorphism of . It suffices to prove that if is a primitive -th root of unity, the minimal polynomial of over is equal to the minimal polynomial of over .
We shall assume that and argue by contradiction. The polynomials and are monic irreducible in and divide , so there exists such that (IV, p. 13, Prop. 13). Lemma 2 (V, p. 82) shows that and have integer coefficients. Let us denote by the polynomial with coefficients in obtained from a polynomial by reduction mod . We thus have in .
Further we have and so is a multiple of in . By Lemma 2 there exists such that . Now we have for every polynomial . By reduction mod we thus obtain . If is an irreducible polynomial in dividing , it must then divide . Since divides , we conclude that divides in . This is absurd because the polynomial is separable in .
It may be shown that for every abelian extension of finite degree over there exists an integer such that is isomorphic to a subextension of . \* In other words, the field is an abelian closure of . *(« Kronecker-Weber theorem »).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
