Algebra, chapter V, § 12. Finite fields
— *Let be a finite field of elements, an algebraically closed extension of and an integer . a) There exists a unique subextension of which is of degree over . b) The field has elements and is the set of fixed points of the automorphism of . c) We have for every generator of the cyclic group . Let be the characteristic of and the degree of over . We have and the mapping is thus an automorphism of the perfect field (V, p. 7, Prop. 4). Therefore the set of roots of the polynomial of is a subfield of . Since the derivative of is equal to , all the roots of this polynomial are simple (IV, p. 17, Prop. 7) and so has elements. It follows that .
Now let L be a subextension of , of degree over . As vector space over , is isomorphic to and so has elements. We thus have for all (Prop. 2), whence . Since , we finally have .
We have thus proved Assertions a) and b), and c) is trivial.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
