Algebra, chapter V, § 12. Finite fields
— Let be a finite field and an algebraically closed extension of . The relative algebraic closure of in consists of () and roots of unity and is an algebraic closure of .
We know to be an algebraic closure of (V, p. 22, Example 2) and it is clear that every root of unity in belongs to . Further, given in , of degree over , if has elements, then the field has , whence , and so is a root of unity in .
Let be a prime number and let be the field of elements. We choose an algebraic closure of , whose existence follows from Steinitz's theorem (V, p. 23, Th. 2). Let be a positive integer and . By Prop. 3 there exists a unique subfield of which is of degree over ; we shall denote it by or by abuse of notation . It is the unique subextension of which has degree over . It is the unique subfield of of cardinal , and every field of cardinal is isomorphic (not canonically) to (Cor. of Prop. 2). We note that consists of those in for which and that if and only if is a power of .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
