Algebra, chapter V, § 12. Finite fields

We have 52≡1(mod12)5^2 \equiv 1 \pmod{12}, hence the residue class of 5 (mod 12) does not generate (Z/12Z)∗(\mathbf{Z}/12\mathbf{Z})^*. So the polynomial Φ12(X)=X4−X2+1\Phi_{12}(X) = X^4 - X^2 + 1 is not irreducible in F5[X]F_5[X]; in fact we have

Φ5(X)=(X2+2X−1)(X2−2X−1) \Phi_5(X) = (X^2 + 2X - 1)(X^2 - 2X - 1)
in F5[X]F_5[X].

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
