Algebra, chapter V, § 16. Differential criteria of separability

— Let UU and VV be two vector spaces of finite dimension over a field LL. Every linear mapping f:U→Vf : U \to V possesses an index equal to [V:L]−[U:L][V : L] - [U : L].

Let NN be the kernel, II the image and CC the cokernel of ff. We have C=V/IC = V/I and II is isomorphic to U/NU/N; thus we have [U:L]=[N:L]+[I:L][U : L] = [N : L] + [I : L] and [V:L]=[C:L]+[I:L][V : L] = [C : L] + [I : L], whence the result.

1^1 Not necessarily commutative. 2^2 On the left.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
