Algebra, chapter VII, § 1. Principal ideal domains

— Let (xi)(x_i) be an arbitrary family of elements of a principal ideal domain AA contained as a subring in an integral domain BB, and let dd be a gcd of the family (xi)(x_i) in AA. Then the family (xi)(x_i) has gcd's in BB, and dd is one of them.

Indeed dd is a common divisor of the xix_i in BB. On the other hand the relation d=∑aixid = \sum a_i x_i shows that every common divisor of the xix_i in BB divides dd.

An important application of this corollary is when A=K[X]A = K[X] and B=E[X]B = E[X], where KK is a field and EE is an extension of KK (IV, p. 12, Cor. 1).

The first assertion of Prop. 1 shows that the ordered group P∗\mathscr{P}^* is lattice ordered (VI,VI, p. 10). In particular every finite family of elements of KK admits an lcm. We can thus apply the results denoted (DIV) in VIVI, pp. 10 to 17 to principal ideal domains.

The following result is a consequence of the second assertion of Prop. I :

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
