Algebra, chapter VII, § 1. Principal ideal domains

Let AA be a ring such that every left ideal of AA is finitely generated. Then every nonempty set Φ\Phi of left ideals of A\mathbf{A}, ordered by inclusion, has a maximal element.

By Zorn's Lemma (Set Theory, III, p. 154, Th. 2) it is enough to prove that Φ\Phi is inductive. Now if (aλ)(a_\lambda) is a totally ordered family of elements of Φ\Phi then the union aa of the ideals aia_i is a left ideal of A\mathbf{A}, and so admits a finite system of generators (ai)1≤i≤n(a_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n}. Since each aia_i belongs to an ideal aλia_{\lambda_i}, and since the family (aλ)(a_\lambda) is totally ordered, the aia_i all belong to the largest of the ideals aλia_{\lambda_i}, say a1a_1. Then a=a1a = a_1 belongs to Φ\Phi, which is thus indeed an inductive set.

Later we will study those rings BB, called noetherian rings, such that every nonempty set of ideals of BB contains a maximal element.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
