Topological Vector Spaces, chapter I, § 1. Topological vector spaces

— Let MM and NN be two vector spaces, and gg a linear mapping of MM in NN. If T0\mathscr{T}_0 is a topology compatible with the vector space structure of NN, then the inverse image of T0\mathscr{T}_0 by gg is compatible with the vector space structure of MM.

We show, for example, that (λ,x)↦λx(\lambda, x) \mapsto \lambda x is continuous at each point (λ0,x0)(\lambda_0, x_0) of K×MK \times M. Put y0=g(x0)y_0 = g(x_0). Every neighbourhood of 0 in MM contains a neighbourhood of the form g(U)g(U) where UU is a neighbourhood of 0 in NN; by hypothesis there exists a neighbourhood VV of 0 in KK and a neighbourhood WW of 0 in NN such that the relations λ−λ0∈V\lambda - \lambda_0 \in V, and y−y0∈Wy - y_0 \in W imply λy−λ0y0∈U\lambda y - \lambda_0 y_0 \in U. Thus the relations λ−λ0∈V\lambda - \lambda_0 \in V, x−x0∈g(W)x - x_0 \in g(W) imply λx−λ0x0∈g(U)\lambda x - \lambda_0 x_0 \in g(U). We can show similarly that (x,y)↦x−y(x, y) \mapsto x - y is continuous in M×MM \times M.

For each index i∈Ii \in I, let Bi\mathscr{B}_i be a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 in EiE_i. From the definition of the topology T\mathscr{T}, the filter of neighbourhoods of 0 for this topology is generated by unions of sets of the families fi−1(Bi)f_i^{-1}(\mathscr{B}_i); in other words, the sets of the form ⋂kfik−1(Vik)\bigcap_k f_{i_k}^{-1}(V_{i_k}) form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0 for T\mathscr{T}, the (ik)1≤k≤n(i_k)_{1 \leq k \leq n} being any finite sequence of indices of I, and, for each index kk, VikV_{i_k} any set of Bik\mathscr{B}_{i_k}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
