Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 7, § 2. Convex sets

Let EE be a vector space and ∥x∥\|x\| a norm on EE; the unit ball BB, formed by the points xx

such that ∥x∥≤1\|x\| \leq 1, is convex since the relations ∥x∥≤1,∥y∥≤1\|x\| \leq 1, \|y\| \leq 1, imply for 0≤λ≤10 \leq \lambda \leq 1 that

∥λx+(1−λ)y∥≤λ∥x∥+(1−λ)∥y∥≤λ+(1−λ)=1. \|\lambda x + (1 - \lambda) y\| \leq \lambda \|x\| + (1 - \lambda) \|y\| \leq \lambda + (1 - \lambda) = 1 .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
