Topological Vector Spaces, II, p. 54, § 7. Extremal points and extremal generators

In the normed space B(N)\mathscr{B}(\mathbf{N}) of bounded sequences of real numbers (I, p. 4) the extremal points of the unit ball are the points x=(ξn)x = (\xi_n) such that ∣ξn∣=1|\xi_n| = 1 for all nn. For, suppose that we had ∣ξn∣≤1|\xi_n| \leq 1 for all nn and ∣ξp∣<1|\xi_p| < 1 for one index pp. We can then write

x=1+ξp2y+1−ξp2z x = \frac{1 + \xi_p}{2} y + \frac{1 - \xi_p}{2} z
where yy (resp. zz) is the point all of whose coordinates are equal to the coordinate of xx with the same index, except in the case of index pp where the coordinate is equal to 1 (resp. −1-1). This shows that xx is not extremal, since we have ∥y∥≤1\|y\| \leq 1 and ∥z∥≤1\|z\| \leq 1. Conversely, if ∣ξn∣=1|\xi_n| = 1 for all nn, then xx is extremal, for the relation ξn=ληn+(1−λ)ζn\xi_n = \lambda \eta_n + (1 - \lambda) \zeta_n with ∣ηn∣≤1, ∣ζn∣≤1|\eta_n| \leq 1,\ |\zeta_n| \leq 1 and 0<λ<10 < \lambda < 1 implies ξn=ηn=ζn\xi_n = \eta_n = \zeta_n.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
