Topological Vector Spaces, chapter IV, § 1. Duality
— (i) Let E be a normed space, with dual E′. For every x∈E, we have
∥x∥=x′∈E′,∥x′∥≤1sup∣⟨x,x′⟩∣.
(ii) Let E1 and E2 be two normed spaces and u a continuous linear mapping from E1 into E2. We have
∥u∥=∥tu∥.
Let x∈E. For every x′∈E′ such that ∥x′∥≤1, we have
∣⟨x,x′⟩∣≤∥x∥⋅∥x′∥≤∥x∥.
By Hahn-Banach theorem (II, p. 23, cor. 2), there exists an element x′ in E′ such that ∥x′∥≤1 and ⟨x,x′⟩=∥x∥. This proves (i).
Let us now prove (ii). By formula (3) and the definition of the transpose, we have
∥tu∥=∥y′∥≤1sup∥tu(y′)∥=∥y′∥≤1,∥x∥≤1sup∣⟨x,tu(y′)⟩∣=∥x∥≤1,∥y′∥≤1sup∣⟨u(x),y′⟩∣=∥x∥≤1sup∥u(x)∥=∥u∥.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
