Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 1. Prehilbertian spaces and hilbertian spaces

— We observe that formula (6) is valid for every sesquilinear form on E×EE \times E (that is to say, for every function ff satisfying (1) and (2), but not necessarily (3)). This remark shows that, when K=CK = \mathbf{C}, a sesquilinear form ff such that f(x,x)f(x, x) is real for all x∈Ex \in E is necessarily hermitian: relation (6) then gives f(y,x)‾=f(x,y)\overline{f(y, x)} = f(x, y) since we have y+εx=ε(x+ε‾y)y + \varepsilon x = \varepsilon(x + \overline{\varepsilon} y) and Q(εz)=Q(z)Q(\varepsilon z) = Q(z) whenever ε4=1\varepsilon^4 = 1.

From the polarisation formulas, we have in particular,

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
