Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 1. Prehilbertian spaces and hilbertian spaces

\* Let n⩾1n \geqslant 1 be an integer and let U be an open set in Rn\mathbf{R}^n. Let μ\mu be the measure on U induced by the Lebesgue measure on Rn\mathbf{R}^n, and put H0=L2(U,μ)\mathscr{H}^0 = L^2(U, \mu). Let H1\mathscr{H}^1 denote the space of all functions f∈H0f \in \mathscr{H}^0 with the following property; for 1⩽i⩽n1 \leqslant i \leqslant n, there exists a function gi∈H∘g_i \in \mathscr{H}^\circ such that

∫Ugi(x) h(x) dμ(x)=−∫Uf(x) Dih(x) dμ(x) \int_U g_i(x)\ h(x)\ d\mu(x) = - \int_U f(x)\ D_i h(x)\ d\mu(x)

for every function hh of class C1C^1 with compact support in U. The function gig_i is defined uniquely up to equivalence with respect to μ\mu, and is denoted by DifD_i f or ∂f/∂xi\partial f / \partial x_i (ith partial derivative). By induction on the integer s⩾1s \geqslant 1, we define Hs\mathscr{H}^s as the set of all functions f∈H1f \in \mathscr{H}^1 such that Dif∈Hs−1D_i f \in \mathscr{H}^{s-1} for 1⩽i⩽n1 \leqslant i \leqslant n. We define a scalar product on Hs\mathscr{H}^s by the formula

⟨f∣g⟩=∑k=0s∑1⩽i1⩽…⩽ik⩽n∫Di1…Dikf‾⋅Di1…Dikg dμ. \langle f|g \rangle = \sum_{k=0}^s \sum_{1 \leqslant i_1 \leqslant \ldots \leqslant i_k \leqslant n} \int \overline{D_{i_1} \ldots D_{i_k} f} \cdot D_{i_1} \ldots D_{i_k} g\ d\mu .

Then Hs\mathscr{H}^s is a complex hilbertian space, called Sobolev space of index s.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
