Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 1. Prehilbertian spaces and hilbertian spaces

Let G be a group (with unit element 1) and π\pi a homomorphism from G into the group of automorphisms of a complex hilbertian space E ; we say that π\pi is a unitary representation of G in E. Let a∈Ea \in E ; we put

ϕ(x)=⟨a∣π(x).a⟩ \phi(x) = \langle a|\pi(x).a \rangle

for all x∈Gx \in G. Then ϕ:G→C\phi : G \to \mathbf{C} is positive definite, in other words satisfies the relation :

(PD) For every λ1,...,λn\lambda_1, ..., \lambda_n in C\mathbf{C} and x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n in GG, we have

∑i,j=1nλi‾λjϕ(xi−1xj)⩾0. \sum_{i,j=1}^n \overline{\lambda_i} \lambda_j \phi(x_i^{-1} x_j) \geqslant 0 .

In fact, the first member of (11) is precisely ∥∑i=1nλiπ(xi).a∥2\| \sum_{i=1}^n \lambda_i \pi(x_i) . a \| ^2.

Conversely, let ϕ\phi be a positive definite function on GG. Let C(G)C^{(G)} be the vector space of all functions with finite support on GG. We define a hermitian form Φ\Phi on GG by

Φ(u,v)=∑x,y∈Gu(x)‾ v(y) ϕ(x−1y) \Phi(u, v) = \sum_{x,y \in G} \overline{u(x)} \ v(y) \ \phi(x^{-1} y)

and the relation (PD) expresses the fact that Φ\Phi is positive. By the corollary of prop. 4, there exists a hilbertian space EE and a linear mapping ρ:C(G)→E\rho : C^{(G)} \to E, with a dense image, such that

Φ(u,v)=⟨ρ(u)∣ρ(v)⟩foru,vinC(G). \Phi(u, v) = \langle \rho(u)|\rho(v) \rangle \quad \text{for} \quad u, v \quad \text{in} \quad C^{(G)} .

For every x∈Gx \in G, let γx\gamma_x be the left translation by xx in C(G)C^{(G)} defined by γxu(y)=u(x−1y)\gamma_x u(y) = u(x^{-1} y) for u∈C(G)u \in C^{(G)} and y∈Gy \in G. We have Φ(γxu,γxv)=Φ(u,v)\Phi(\gamma_x u, \gamma_x v) = \Phi(u, v). Now apply assertion b) of the corollary of prop. 4 to ρ\rho and ρ∘γx\rho \circ \gamma_x: there exists a unique automorphism π(x)\pi(x) of the hilbertian space EE such that ρ∘γx=π(x)∘ρ\rho \circ \gamma_x = \pi(x) \circ \rho. We see immediately that π\pi is a homomorphism from GG into the group of automorphisms of EE.

Let δ\delta be the element of C(G)C^{(G)} defined by δ(1)=1,δ(x)=0\delta(1) = 1, \delta(x) = 0 for x≠1x \neq 1 in GG. We have u=∑x∈Gu(x).γxδu = \sum_{x \in G} u(x) . \gamma_x \delta for all u∈C(G)u \in C^{(G)}, and so ρ(u)=∑x∈Gu(x) π(x).a\rho(u) = \sum_{x \in G} u(x) \ \pi(x) . a by putting a=ρ(δ)a = \rho(\delta).

Formulas (12) and (13) imply that ϕ(x)=⟨a∣π(x).a⟩\phi(x) = \langle a|\pi(x).a \rangle for all x∈Gx \in G. We remark that the set of vectors π(x).a\pi(x).a for all x∈Gx \in G, is total in EE.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
