Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

— The relation u∗u=1Eu^*u = 1_E does not characterize all the automorphisms of the hilbertian space EE. For example, let E=ℓ2(N)E = \ell^2(\mathbf{N}) and let uu be defined by u(xn)=xn−1u(x_n) = x_{n-1} for n≥1n \geq 1 and u(x)0=0u(x)_0 = 0. We have ∥u(x)∥=∥x∥\|u(x)\| = \|x\| for all x∈Ex \in E, that is, u∗u=1Eu^*u = 1_E, but uu is not surjective.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
