Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

Let EE and FF be two hilbertian spaces and u∈L(E;F)u \in \mathscr{L}(E; F). The orthogonal of the kernel of uu in EE is said to be the initial subspace of uu and the closure of the image of uu in FF is called the final subspace of uu. The orthoprojector from EE (resp. FF) onto the initial (resp. final) subspace of uu is called the initial (resp. final) orthoprojector of uu.

Let PP be the initial subspace of uu. Since EE is the direct sum of PP and of the kernel of uu, we have u(P)=u(E)u(P) = u(E).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
