Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

Let u∈L(E;F)u \in \mathscr{L}(E; F), let PP be its initial subspace and QQ be the final subspace. Let pp (resp. qq) denote the initial (resp. final) orthoprojector of uu. Assume that uu is partially isometric.

(i) The mapping u∗∈L(F;E)u^* \in \mathscr{L}(F; E) is partially isometric, with initial subspace QQ and final subspace PP. The isomorphism from PP onto QQ induced by uu is then the inverse of the isomorphism from QQ onto PP induced by u∗u^*.

(ii) We have u∗u=pu^*u = p and uu∗=quu^* = q.

On account of prop. 4 (i), assertion (i) is a consequence of (ii).

We now prove (ii). Since PP contains the image of u∗u^*, the mapping u∗uu^*u maps EE into PP. Let x∈Ex \in E and y∈Py \in P, then

⟨u∗u(x)∣y⟩=⟨u(x)∣u(y)⟩. \langle u^*u(x)|y \rangle = \langle u(x)|u(y) \rangle .

If xx belongs to PP, then ⟨u(x)∣u(y)⟩=⟨x∣y⟩\langle u(x)|u(y) \rangle = \langle x|y \rangle by the definition of a partially isometric mapping; if xx belongs to the kernel NN of uu, then u(x)=0u(x) = 0, hence ⟨u(x)∣u(y)⟩=0\langle u(x)|u(y) \rangle = 0 and ⟨x∣y⟩=0\langle x|y \rangle = 0 since NN and PP are orthogonal. Since E=P⊕NE = P \oplus N, we have ⟨u∗u(x)−x∣y⟩=0\langle u^*u(x) - x|y \rangle = 0 in all the cases, and so u∗uu^*u is the orthoprojector pp from EE onto PP. That uu∗=quu^* = q follows by interchanging uu and u∗u^* in the above.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
