Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

For every u∈L(E;F)u \in \mathscr{L}(E; F), the following conditions are equivalent :

(i) uu is partially isometric ; (ii) u∗u^* is partially isometric ; (iii) u∗uu^*u is an orthoprojector ; (iv) uu∗uu^* is an orthoprojector ; (v) *uu∗u=u;∗uu^*u = u ;* (vi) *u∗uu∗=u∗.∗u^*uu^* = u^* .*

By prop. 5, (i) is equivalent to (ii).

(i) ⇒\Rightarrow (v) : Suppose uu is partially isometric. Then u∗uu^*u is the initial orthoprojector of uu by prop. 5. Hence for every x∈Ex \in E, u∗u(x)−xu^*u(x) - x belongs to the kernel of uu, that is, uu∗u(x)=u(x)uu^*u(x) = u(x).

(v) ⇒\Rightarrow (iii) : Suppose that uu∗u=uuu^*u = u and let p=u∗up = u^*u; then p=p∗p = p^* and p2=pp^2 = p. Let MM (resp. NN) be the image (resp. the kernel) of pp. For x∈Mx \in M and y∈Ny \in N, we have ⟨x∣y⟩=⟨p(x)∣y⟩=⟨x∣p∗(y)⟩=⟨x∣p(y)⟩=0\langle x|y \rangle = \langle p(x)|y \rangle = \langle x|p^*(y) \rangle = \langle x|p(y) \rangle = 0. Since MM and NN are orthogonal, pp is the orthoprojector from EE onto MM.

(iii) ⇒\Rightarrow (i) : Suppose p=u∗up = u^*u is an orthoprojector with image MM and kernel NN.

For all x∈Ex \in E, we have

∥u(x)∥2=⟨u∗u(x)∣x⟩=⟨p(x)∣x⟩. \|u(x)\|^2 = \langle u^*u(x)|x \rangle = \langle p(x)|x \rangle .
Hence u(x)=0u(x) = 0 for x∈Nx \in N and ∥u(x)∥=∥x∥\|u(x)\| = \|x\| for x∈Mx \in M, and so uu is partially isometric with kernel NN and initial subspace MM.

We have proved the equivalence of (i), (iii) and (v). Replacing uu by u∗u^*, we can deduce the equivalence of (ii), (iv) and (vi). This proves prop. 6.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
