Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

Let MM and NN be two closed vector subspaces of EE, and pMp_M (resp. pNp_N) the orthoprojector from EE onto MM (resp. NN). Then M⊂NM \subset N if and only if pM≤pNp_M \leq p_N. For, we have pM∗pM=pMp_M^* p_M = p_M, hence

∥pM(x)∥2=⟨pM(x)∣pM(x)⟩=⟨x∣pM∗pM(x)⟩=⟨x∣pM(x)⟩ \|p_M(x)\|^2 = \langle p_M(x)|p_M(x)\rangle = \langle x|p_M^* p_M(x)\rangle = \langle x|p_M(x)\rangle
for all x∈Ex \in E. The relation pM≤pNp_M \leq p_N is therefore equivalent to « ∥pM(x)∥≤∥pN(x)∥\|p_M(x)\| \leq \|p_N(x)\| for all x∈Ex \in E ». If M⊂NM \subset N, we have pM=pMpNp_M = p_M p_N, hence ∥pM(x)∥≤∥pN(x)∥\|p_M(x)\| \leq \|p_N(x)\| since ∥pM∥≤1\|p_M\| \leq 1. Conversely, if ∥pM(x)∥≤∥pN(x)∥\|p_M(x)\| \leq \|p_N(x)\| for all x∈Ex \in E, the kernel of pMp_M contains the kernel of pNp_N, that is, that M∘⊃N∘M^\circ \supset N^\circ, which implies that M⊂NM \subset N.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
