Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

— Let vv be a continuous, positive endomorphism with finite trace of the hilbertian space EE. There exists an orthonormal basis (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} of EE and a summable family of positive real numbers (λi)i∈I(\lambda_i)_{i \in I} such that v(ei)=λieiv(e_i) = \lambda_i e_i for all i∈Ii \in I.

Let Φ(x,y)=⟨x∣v(y)⟩\Phi(x, y) = \langle x|v(y)\rangle for x,yx, y in EE. Then Φ\Phi is a positive hermitian form on EE. There exists (V, p. 8, corollary) a hilbertian space FF and a continuous linear mapping uu from EE into FF such that Φ(x,y)=⟨u(x)∣u(y)⟩\Phi(x, y) = \langle u(x)|u(y)\rangle for x,yx, y in EE. In other words, we have v=u∗uv = u^*u. By virtue of def. 9 (V, p. 52), uu is a Hilbert-Schmidt mapping from EE into FF. By th. 2, there exists an orthonormal basis (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} of EE such that the vectors u(ei)u(e_i) are two by two orthogonal. Let i∈Ii \in I; for every j≠ij \neq i in II, we have

⟨ej∣v(ei)⟩=⟨u(ej)∣u(ei)⟩=0 \langle e_j|v(e_i)\rangle = \langle u(e_j)|u(e_i)\rangle = 0

hence v(ei)v(e_i) is proportional to eie_i and is of the form λiei\lambda_i e_i, where λi=⟨ei∣v(ei)⟩\lambda_i = \langle e_i | v(e_i) \rangle; then

λi⩾0and∑i∈Iλi=Tr⁡(v)<+∞. \lambda_i \geqslant 0 \quad \text{and} \quad \sum_{i \in I} \lambda_i = \operatorname{Tr}(v) < + \infty .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
