Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

— With the notations of th. 2, let J be the set of all i∈Ii \in I such that u(ei)≠0u(e_i) \neq 0. For all i∈Ji \in J, let λi=∥u(ei)∥\lambda_i = \| u(e_i) \| and fi=λi−1u(ei)f_i = \lambda_i^{-1} u(e_i). Then (ei)i∈J(e_i)_{i \in J} (resp. (fi)i∈J(f_i)_{i \in J}) is an orthonormal basis of the initial (resp. final) subspace of u, we have u(ei)=λifiu(e_i) = \lambda_i f_i for all i∈Ji \in J and ∑i∈Jλi2=∥u∥22\sum_{i \in J} \lambda_i^2 = \| u \|_2^2 is finite.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
