Functions of a Real Variable, chapter I, § 4. CONVEX FUNCTIONS OF A REAL VARIABLE

The function ∣x∣|x| is convex on R\mathbf{R}, since

∣λx+(1−λ)x′∣≤λ∣x∣+(1−λ)∣x′∣ |\lambda x + (1 - \lambda)x'| \leq \lambda |x| + (1 - \lambda)|x'|

for 0≤λ≤10 \leq \lambda \leq 1.

It is clear that if ff is convex on I, then its restriction to any interval J⊂IJ \subset I is convex on J.

Let ff be a convex function on I, and x,x′x, x' two points of I such that x<x′x < x'; if z∈Iz \in I is exterior to [x,x′][x, x'] then MzM_z lies above the line D joining MxM_x and Mx′M_{x'}; this is an immediate consequence of the lemma.

One deduces from this that if zz is a point such that x<z<x′x < z < x' and such that MzM_z lies on the segment MxMx′M_x M_{x'}, then, for every other point z′z' such that x<z′<x′x < z' < x' the point Mz′M_{z'} also lies on the segment MxMx′M_x M_{x'}, for it follows from the above that Mz′M_{z'} is at the same time both above and below this segment; in other words, ff is then equal to an affine linear function on [x,x′][x, x'].

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
