Functions of a Real Variable, chapter I, § 4. CONVEX FUNCTIONS OF A REAL VARIABLE

Let ff be a finite real function convex on an interval I⊂RI \subset \mathbf{R}. Then at every interior point aa of II the function ff is continuous, has finite right and left derivatives, and fg′(a)≤fd′(a)f'_g(a) \leq f'_d(a).

Indeed, for x∈Ix \in I and x>ax > a the function x↦f(x)−f(a)x−ax \mapsto \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a} is increasing (prop. 5) and bounded below, since if y<ay < a and y∈Iy \in I we have

f(y)−f(a)y−a≤f(x)−f(a)x−a \frac{f(y) - f(a)}{y - a} \leq \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a}
(5)

by prop. 5; this function therefore has a finite right limit at the point aa; in other words, fd′(a)f'_d(a) exists and is finite; further, letting xx approach aa (x>ax > a) in (5), it follows that

f(y)−f(a)y−a≤fd′(a) \frac{f(y) - f(a)}{y - a} \leq f'_d(a)
(6)

for all y<ay < a belonging to I. In the same way one shows that fg′(a)f'_g(a) exists and that

fd′(a)≤f(x)−f(a)x−a f'_d(a) \leq \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a}
(7)

for x∈Ix \in I and x>ax > a. On letting xx approach aa (x>ax > a) in this last inequality we obtain fg′(a)≤fd′(a)f'_g(a) \leq f'_d(a). The existence of the left and right derivatives at the point aa clearly ensures the continuity of ff at this point.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
