Functions of a Real Variable, chapter V, § 2. ASYMPTOTIC EXPANSIONS
For real tending to the set of functions of the form (defined for ), where and are arbitrary real numbers, is a comparison scale. Indeed, here again the quotient of two functions in is a function in ; it is enough to show that if and are not both zero then tends to 0 or ; this is clear if ; if one has , and if one has for any , whence the proposition.
Note that this last comparison scale is a totally ordered set (for the relation "f g" or ") whose order structure is isomorphic to the lexicographic order on (Set Theory, III, p. 157); recall that in this structure the relation means ", or and ").
Similarly, the scale formed by the functions , where runs through the set of polynomials with no constant term, has order structure isomorphic to the order structure of , in which the relation implies that the dominant term of the polynomial has a coefficient (cf. Alg., VI. 19, Example 2).
Let be a map from a set F into E, such that is a filter base on F. If is a comparison scale on E (for the filter base ) then the functions , as runs through , form a comparison scale on F (for the filter base ).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
