Functions of a Real Variable, chapter V, § 2. ASYMPTOTIC EXPANSIONS

A function may be comparable to all the functions of a scale and yet not admit a principal part with respect to this scale. For example, for xx real tending to +∞+\infty, x\sqrt{x} has no principal part with respect to the scale xnx^n where nn is a rational integer; log⁡x\log x has no principal part with respect to the scale of xαx^\alpha (α\alpha arbitrary real); exp⁡(log⁡x)\exp(\sqrt{\log x}) and x′=exlog⁡xx' = e^{x \log x} have no principal part with respect to the scale of the xα(log⁡x)βx^\alpha (\log x)^\beta, nor with respect to the scale of the exp⁡(p(x))\exp(p(x)) (pp a polynomial with no constant term).

The concept of principal part admits extensive generalization. Suppose that a function f∈H(F,V)f \in \mathscr{H}(\mathfrak{F}, V) has a principal part a1g1a_1 g_1 with respect to a scale E\mathscr{E}; the relation f∼a1g1f \sim a_1 g_1 is equivalent to f−a1g1≪g1f - a_1 g_1 \ll g_1 (V, p. 216, def. 4); to study the function ff more closely one is thus led to consider the function f−a1g1f - a_1 g_1. If this function has a principal part a2g2a_2 g_2 with respect to E\mathscr{E} one must have g2≪g1g_2 \ll g_1 and f−a1g1−a2g2≪g2f - a_1 g_1 - a_2 g_2 \ll g_2.

More generally, suppose that the scale E\mathscr{E} is written parametrically in the form (gα)(g_\alpha) where α\alpha runs through a set of indices AA endowed with a totally ordered structure isomorphic to the opposite of the order structure of E\mathscr{E}: the relation α<β\alpha < \beta is thus equivalent to gβ≪gαg_\beta \ll g_\alpha. In these circumstances:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
