Functions of a Real Variable, chapter VI, § 1. GENERALIZED TAYLOR EXPANSIONS

One says that an operator U on E is a composition operator if, for every a⩾0a \geqslant 0, it is permutable with the translation operator by a.

In the notation introduced above, this definition becomes the identity

Ux+aξ(f(ξ))=Uxξ(f(ξ+a)) U_{x+a}^{\xi}(f(\xi)) = U_x^{\xi}(f(\xi + a))

in xx and aa (x∈I,a⩾0x \in I, a \geqslant 0). One can exchange the rôles of xx and aa in this identity if x⩾0x \geqslant 0, then put a=0a = 0; one thus obtains for x⩾0x \geqslant 0

Uxξ(f(ξ))=U0ξ(f(ξ+x)) U_x^{\xi}(f(\xi)) = U_0^{\xi}(f(\xi + x))

where U0U_0 is the linear form on E which to each function f∈Ef \in E associates the value g(0)g(0) of g=U(f)g = U(f).

If ff is a polynomial, one has f(ξ+x)=∑k=0∞1k!f(k)(ξ)xkf(\xi + x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{1}{k!} f^{(k)}(\xi) x^k, and formula (26) shows that U(f)U(f) is also a polynomial; restricted to the set of polynomials in xx, with coefficients in C\mathbf{C}, (a set which one can identify with the algebra C[X]\mathbf{C}[X]), the operator UU is then a composition operator in the sense of def. I of VI, p. 270, and all the results of the preceding sections can be applied to it.

We again write unu_n for the Appell polynomials attached to the operator UU. To the generalized Taylor expansion of a polynomial (VI, p. 274, formula (13)) there corresponds, for more general functions, the following result:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
