Functions of a Real Variable, chapter VII, § 1. THE GAMMA FUNCTION IN THE REAL DOMAIN

Let ff be a finite real function, >0> 0, defined and continuous on the product I×JI \times J of two open intervals of R\mathbf{R}, and such that, for every t∈Jt \in J the function x↦f(x,t)x \mapsto f(x, t) is logarithmically convex and twice differentiable on II. Under these hypotheses, if the integral g(x)=∫Jf(x,t)dtg(x) = \int_J f(x, t) dt converges for every x∈Ix \in I, then gg is logarithmically convex on II.

First we show that for every compact interval K⊂JK \subset J the function gK(x)=∫Kf(x,t)dtg_K(x) = \int_K f(x, t) dt is logarithmically convex. Indeed, if K=[a,b]K = [a, b], the sequence of functions

gn(x)=b−an∑k=0n−1f(x,a+kb−an) g_n(x) = \frac{b-a}{n} \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} f\left(x, a + k \frac{b-a}{n}\right)

converges simply to gK(x)g_K(x) on II (II, p. 57, prop. 5) hence log⁡gn\log g_n converges simply to log⁡gK\log g_K; by lemma 1 of VII, p. 310, log⁡gn\log g_n is convex on II, so (I, p. 27, prop. 4) it is the same for log⁡gK\log g_K.

On the other hand, gg is the pointwise limit of the gKg_K along the directed set of compact subintervals of II (II, p. 64), so log⁡g\log g is the pointwise limit of the log⁡gK\log g_K; these last functions being convex on II, so is log⁡g\log g (I, p. 27, prop. 4).

One can show easily that lemmas 1 and 2 remain valid even when one does not assume that the functions are twice differentiable (VII, p. 327, exerc. 5).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
