Integration, chapter III, § 1. Measures on a locally compact space

— For every real measure μ\mu on a locally compact space XX,

∥μ∥=sup⁡∥f∥≤1, f∈K(X;R)∣μ(f)∣. \| \mu \| = \sup_{\| f \| \leq 1,\ f \in \mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R})} | \mu(f) | .

It suffices to make use of the formula (22) and the expression (9) for ∣μ∣(f)|\mu|(f) when μ\mu is a real measure and f∈K+(X)f \in \mathscr{K}_+(X).

The set of bounded real measures is therefore the dual of the normed space K(X;R)\mathscr{K}(X; \mathbf{R}); it is denoted M1(X,R)\mathscr{M}^1(X, \mathbf{R}), or M1(X)\mathscr{M}^1(X) if no confusion can result. The canonical injection M1(X,R)→M1(X;C)\mathscr{M}^1(X, \mathbf{R}) \to \mathscr{M}^1(X; \mathbf{C}) is an isometry by virtue of (24).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
