Integration, chapter V, § 5. Measures defined by numerical densities

— For every number p such that 1<p<+∞1 < p < +\infty, the Banach space Lp(T,μ)L^p(T, \mu) is reflexive.

In general, the dual of L∞L^\infty is not isomorphic to L1L^1, consequently L1L^1 and L∞L^\infty are not reflexive (Exer. 10). We are going to characterize the continuous linear forms on L∞L^\infty that arise, by passage to the quotient, from a linear form g↦∫fgdμg \mapsto \int f g d\mu on L∞\mathscr{L}^\infty, where g∈L1g \in \mathscr{L}^1.

The ordered vector space L∞(T,μ)L^\infty(T, \mu), which is a subspace of Lloc1(T,μ)L^1_{loc}(T, \mu), is fully lattice-ordered; for, if (fα)(f_\alpha) is a family of positive functions in L∞\mathscr{L}^\infty whose set of classes (f˙α)(\dot{f}_\alpha) is bounded above in L∞L^\infty, there exists an a≥0a \geq 0 such that N∞(fα)≤aN_\infty(f_\alpha) \leq a for all α\alpha. Since Lloc1(T,μ)L^1_{loc}(T, \mu) is fully lattice-ordered, the family (f˙α)(\dot{f}_\alpha) admits a supremum h˙\dot{h} in Lloc1(T,μ)L^1_{loc}(T, \mu); but since a˙≥f˙α\dot{a} \geq \dot{f}_\alpha for every α\alpha, we have h˙≤a˙\dot{h} \leq \dot{a}, consequently N∞(h)≤aN_\infty(h) \leq a, whence our assertion.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
