Integration, VII, p. 62, § 3. Applications and examples

**Let LL be a totally ordered finite set. For every λ∈L\lambda \in L, let VλV_\lambda be a free module of finite dimension over a commutative ring kk; for λ,μ\lambda, \mu in LL such that λ≤μ\lambda \leq \mu, let fλμ∈Homk(Vμ,Vλ)f_{\lambda \mu} \in \mathrm{Hom}_k(V_\mu, V_\lambda). Then the linear mapping

(vλ)λ∈L↦(∑μ≥λfλμ(vμ))λ∈L, (v_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} \mapsto \left( \sum_{\mu \geq \lambda} f_{\lambda \mu}(v_\mu) \right)_{\lambda \in L},
from ∏λ∈LVλ\prod_{\lambda \in L} V_\lambda into ∏λ∈LVλ\prod_{\lambda \in L} V_\lambda, has determinant ∏λ∈Ldet⁡fλλ\prod_{\lambda \in L} \det f_{\lambda \lambda}.

One reduces immediately to the case that LL is an interval of integers, and the lemma then follows from A, III, §8, No. 6, formula (31).

If Z∈TJZ \in T_J, one then sees that there exists Z′∈TJZ' \in T_J such that Z′Z=InZ'Z = I_n, whence Z′=Z−1Z' = Z^{-1}. Thus, TJT_J is a closed subgroup of GL(n,K)\mathbf{GL}(n, K). On the other hand, Prop. 15 of §1, No. 10 shows that the measure

⨂(i,j)∈Jdzij \bigotimes_{(i, j) \in J} dz_{ij}

is a left Haar measure on TJT_J. By calculating ZZ′ZZ' one sees in the same way that this measure is a right Haar measure on TJT_J.

There is an analogous result if, in the definition of TJT_J, the roles of rows and columns are interchanged.

When JJ is the set of pairs (i,j)(i, j) such that i<ji < j, the group TJT_J is called the upper strict triangular group of order nn over KK, and is denoted T1(n,K)T_1(n, K). Its transpose is called the lower strict triangular group.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
