Integration, VII, p. 69, § 3. Applications and examples

Let ψ\psi be a polynomial ≠0\neq 0 of K[X1,…,Xr]K[X_1, \ldots, X_r]. In the space KrK^r, the set N defined by ψ(x1,…,xr)=0\psi(x_1, \ldots, x_r) = 0 is negligible for the Haar measure.

Let us argue by induction on rr. The lemma is evident for r=1r = 1, since N is then a finite set. Changing if necessary the numbering of the variables, we can suppose that ψ∉K[X1,…,Xr−1]\psi \notin K[X_1, \ldots, X_{r-1}]; write

ψ(X1,…,Xr)=Xrmψ0(X1,…,Xr−1)+⋯+ψm(X1,…,Xr−1) \psi(X_1, \ldots, X_r) = X_r^m \psi_0(X_1, \ldots, X_{r-1}) + \cdots + \psi_m(X_1, \ldots, X_{r-1})

with m>0m > 0 and ψ0≠0\psi_0 \neq 0. In the space Kr−1K^{r-1}, let N0N_0 be the set defined by ψ0(x1,…,xr−1)=0\psi_0(x_1, \ldots, x_{r-1}) = 0, which is negligible by the induction hypothesis. For every (x1,…,xr−1)∉N0(x_1, \ldots, x_{r-1}) \notin N_0, the set of xr∈Kx_r \in K such that (x1,…,xr−1,xr)∈N(x_1, \ldots, x_{r-1}, x_r) \in N is finite, therefore negligible. Since KrK^r is countable at infinity (§ 1, No. 10, Cor. of Prop. 13), N∩[(Kr−1−N0)×K]N \cap [(K^{r-1} - N_0) \times K] is negligible in KrK^r (Ch. V, § 8, No. 2, Prop. 4). Therefore N is negligible.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
