Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

Let gg be a Lie algebra over KK and MM a KK-module. A homomorphism of gg into the Lie Algebra gl(M)gl(M) is called a representation of gg on the module MM. An injective representation is called faithful. If KK is a field, the dimension (finite or infinite) of MM over KK is called the dimension of the representation. The representation x↦ad⁡xx \mapsto \operatorname{ad} x of gg on the KK-module gg is called the adjoint representation of gg.

A representation of gg on MM is thus a KK-linear mapping ρ\rho of gg into the endomorphism module of MM such that

ρ([x,y])⋅m=ρ(x)ρ(y)⋅m−ρ(y)ρ(x)⋅m \rho([x, y]) \cdot m = \rho(x) \rho(y) \cdot m - \rho(y) \rho(x) \cdot m

for all x∈g,y∈g,m∈Mx \in g, y \in g, m \in M.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
