Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

*Let gg be a Lie algebra over a field KK, UU its enveloping algebra, hh a finite-dimensional ideal of gg and β\beta an invariant bilinear form on gg, whose restriction to hh is non-degenerate. Let (ei)1≤i≤n,(ej′)1≤j≤n(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n}, (e'_j)_{1 \leq j \leq n} be two bases of hh such that β(ei,ej′)=δij\beta(e_i, e'_j) = \delta_{ij}. Then the element c=∑i=1neiei′c = \sum_{i=1}^n e_i e'_i of UU belongs to the centre of UU and is independent of the choice of basis (ei)(e_i).

For x∈gx \in g let xhx_h be the restriction to hh of ad⁡gx\operatorname{ad}_g x. Then x↦xhx \mapsto x_h is a representation of gg on the vector space hh and the restriction β′\beta' of β\beta to hh is invariant under this representation. By no. 5, Example 3, the tensor ∑i=1nei⊗ei′\sum_{i=1}^n e_i \otimes e'_i is independent of the choice of basis (ei)(e_i) and is an invariant element of the tensor algebra of hh. It is also an element of the tensor algebra TT of gg, which is invariant for the representation derived from the adjoint representation of gg. Its canonical image in UU, that is cc, is therefore independent of the choice of basis (ei)(e_i) and is an invariant for the representation of gg on UU considered at the end of no. 2. This element is therefore permutable with every element of gg and therefore belongs to the centre of UU.

When β\beta is the bilinear form associated with a gg-module MM, the element cc of Proposition 11 is called the Casimir element associated with MM (or with the corresponding representation). This element exists if the restriction of β\beta to hh is non-degenerate.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
