Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

*Let gg be a Lie algebra over a field KK, hh an ideal of gg of finite dimension n and M a g-module of finite dimension over K. Let c be the Casimir element (assumed to exist) associated with M and h.

(a) Tr⁡(cM)=n\operatorname{Tr}(c_M) = n. (b) If M is simple and n is not divisible by the characteristic of K, cMc_M is an automorphism of M.

In the notation of Proposition 11,

Tr⁡(cM)=∑i=1nTr⁡((ei)M(ei′)M)=∑i=1nβ(ei,ei′)=n. \operatorname{Tr}(c_M) = \sum_{i=1}^n \operatorname{Tr}((e_i)_M(e'_i)_M) = \sum_{i=1}^n \beta(e_i, e'_i) = n.

Hence, if n is not divisible by the characteristic of K, cM≠0c_M \neq 0. On the other hand, as c belongs to the centre of U, cMc_M is permutable with all the xM,x∈gx_M, x \in g. If further M is simple, cMc_M is therefore invertible in L(M)\mathscr{L}(M) (Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 4, no. 3, Proposition 2).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
