Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 4. Nilpotent Lie algebras
Let g be a Lie algebra, a an ideal of g, M a g-module of finite dimension over
K and a Jordan-Hölder series of the -module . The following conditions are equivalent:
(a) for all , is nilpotent; (b) for all , is in the Jacobson radical of the associative algebra generated by 1 and the where ; (c) for all ,
If these conditions are fulfilled, is orthogonal to with respect to the bilinear form associated with the -module .
(b) (a): as is finite-dimensional over , the Jacobson radical of is a nilpotent ideal (Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 6, no. 4, Theorem 3) and hence every element of this radical is nilpotent.
(a) (c): each () is a simple -module. For all , the endomorphism (which is derived from by restricting to and passing to the quotient) is nilpotent if condition (a) holds and hence zero by Lemma 2; in other words, .
(c) (b): suppose condition (c) holds; let and . Then () and hence ; thus is a left nilideal of and hence is contained in the Jacobson radical of (Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 6, no. 3, Corollary 3 to Theorem 1).
Finally, suppose conditions (a), (b) and (c) hold. Let and . We have just seen that is nilpotent and hence , which proves the last assertion of the lemma.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
