Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 6. Semi-simple Lie algebras

Let gg be a Lie algebra. Then the following two conditions are equivalent: (a) All finite-dimensional linear representations of gg are semi-simple. (b) Given a linear representation φ\varphi of gg on a finite-dimensional vector space VV and a vector subspace W of codimension 1 such that ρ(x)(V)⊂W\rho(x)(V) \subset W for all x∈gx \in g, there exists a supplementary line of W which is stable under ρ(g)\rho(g) (and hence annihilated by ρ(g)\rho(g)).

Clearly (a) implies (b). Suppose that (b) holds. Let σ\sigma be a finite-dimensional representation of gg on a vector space M and N a vector subspace which is stable under σ(g)\sigma(g). Let μ\mu be the representation of gg on L(M)\mathscr{L}(M) canonically derived from σ\sigma (§ 3, no. 3): recall that μ(x)=adL(M)ρ(x)\mu(x) = \mathrm{ad}_{\mathscr{L}(M)} \rho(x). Let V (resp. W) be the subspace of L(M)\mathscr{L}(M) consisting of the linear mappings of M into N whose restriction to N is a homothety (resp. zero); then W is of codimension 1 in V and μ(x)(V)⊂W\mu(x)(V) \subset W for all x∈gx \in g. By condition (b), there exists u∈Vu \in V which is annihilated by μ(x)\mu(x) for all x∈gx \in g and whose restriction to N is a non-zero homothety. By multiplying uu by a suitable scalar, it can be assumed that uu is a projector of M onto N. To say that μ(x)⋅u=0\mu(x) \cdot u = 0 means that uu is permutable with σ(x)\sigma(x). Hence the kernel of uu is a supplement of N in M which is stable under σ(x)\sigma(x) for all x∈gx \in g. Hence σ\sigma is semi-simple.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
