Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter II, § 2. Free Lie algebras

Let XX be a set, let MM be an L(X)L(X)-module and let dd be a mapping of XX into MM. There exists one and only one linear mapping DD of L(X)L(X) into MM extending dd and satisfying the relation:

D([a,a′])=a.D(a′)−a′.D(a)for a,a′ in L(X). D([a, a']) = a.D(a') - a'.D(a) \quad \text{for } a, a' \text{ in } L(X).
We define a Lie algebra gg with underlying module M×L(X)M \times L(X) by means of the bracket
[(m,a),(m′,a′)]=(a.m′−a′.m,[a,a′]), [(m, a), (m', a')] = (a.m' - a'.m, [a, a']),

for a,a′a, a' in L(X)L(X) and m,m′m, m' in MM (Chapter I, § 1, no. 8). Let ff be the homomorphism of L(X)L(X) into gg such that f(x)=(d(x),x)f(x) = (d(x), x) for all xx in XX; let f(a)=(D(a),u(a))f(a) = (D(a), u(a)) for all aa in L(X)L(X). By formula (21), uu is a homomorphism of L(X)L(X) into itself; as u(x)=xu(x) = x for xx in XX, u(a)=au(a) = a for all aa in L(X)L(X), whence

(22)(22)
f(a)=(D(a),a).f(a) = (D(a), a).

By (21) and (22), relation (20) then follows from f([a,a′])=[f(a),f(a′)]f([a, a']) = [f(a), f(a')].

Conversely, let D′D' be a mapping of L(X)L(X) into MM satisfying relation (20') analogous to (20) and extending dd. Let f′(a)=(D′(a),a)f'(a) = (D'(a), a) for a∈L(X)a \in L(X); by (20') and (21), f′f' is a homomorphism of L(X)L(X) into gg, coinciding with ff on XX, whence f′=ff' = f and D′=DD' = D.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
