Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 3. Passage from a Lie group to its Lie algebra

Let E be a finite-dimensional vector space. Let ϕ\phi be the morphism g↦det⁡gg \mapsto \det g of the Lie group GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E) into the Lie group K∗K^*. The mapping L(ϕ)\mathbf{L}(\phi) of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) into K is the mapping x↦Tr⁡xx \mapsto \operatorname{Tr} x. The kernel SL(E)\mathbf{SL}(E) of ϕ\phi is a Lie subgroup of GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E) with Lie algebra sl(E)\mathfrak{sl}(E).

We choose a norm and a basis of E. The expansion of the determinant proves that

det⁡(1+u)∈1+Tr⁡u+o(∥u∥) \det(1 + u) \in 1 + \operatorname{Tr} u + o(\|u\|)
when uu tends to 0 in L(E)\mathscr{L}(E). Hence, using Proposition 34, no. 9, for x∈L(E)=L(GL(E))x \in \mathscr{L}(E) = \mathbf{L}(\mathbf{GL}(E)):
L(ϕ)(x)=⟨x,ϕ⟩=Tr⁡x. \mathbf{L}(\phi)(x) = \langle x, \phi \rangle = \operatorname{Tr} x.
It follows that ϕ\phi is a submersion. Therefore, Ker⁡ϕ=SL(E)\operatorname{Ker} \phi = \mathbf{SL}(E) is a Lie subgroup of GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E) whose Lie algebra is Ker⁡L(ϕ)=sl(E)\operatorname{Ker} \mathbf{L}(\phi) = \mathfrak{sl}(E).

Let E1,…,EnE_1, \ldots, E_n be complete normable spaces and E their direct sum. Every x∈L(E)x \in \mathscr{L}(E) can be represented by a matrix (xij)1≤i,j≤n(x_{ij})_{1 \leq i, j \leq n}, where xij∈L(Ei,Ej)x_{ij} \in \mathscr{L}(E_i, E_j).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
