Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 3. Passage from a Lie group to its Lie algebra

Let E be a finite-dimensional complex vector space, ϕ\phi a non-degenerate Hermitian sesquilinear form on E and U the unitary group of ϕ\phi. Then U is a real Lie subgroup of GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E) and L(U)L(U) is the set of x∈L(E)x \in \mathscr{L}(E) such that ixix is Hermitian.

When E≠{0}E \neq \{0\}, U is not a Lie subgroup of the complex Lie group GL(E)\mathbf{GL}(E), for L(U)L(U) is not a complex vector subspace of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
