Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let RR be a root system in VV, (Ri)(R_i) the family of its irreducible components, ViV_i the vector subspace of VV generated by RiR_i, BB the invariant symmetric bilinear form on VV defined in Prop. 3, and B′B' a symmetric bilinear form on VV invariant under W(R)W(R). Then the ViV_i are pairwise orthogonal with respect to B′B', and, for all ii, the restrictions of BB and B′B' to ViV_i are proportional.

If vi∈Vi,vj∈Vj,i≠jv_i \in V_i, v_j \in V_j, i \neq j, and if w∈W(Rj)w \in W(R_j), then

B′(vi,w(vj))=B′(vi,vj), B'(v_i, w(v_j)) = B'(v_i, v_j),
which shows that w(vj)−vjw(v_j) - v_j is orthogonal to viv_i with respect to B′B'. Since VjV_j is irreducible for W(Rj)W(R_j), it is generated by the w(vj)−vjw(v_j) - v_j, and it is therefore orthogonal to ViV_i.

The fact that the restrictions of BB and B′B' to each of the ViV_i are proportional follows from Prop. 1 of Chap. V, § 2, no. 1.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
