Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Assume that VV is equipped with the structure of an ordered vector space such that, for this structure, every root of RR is either positive or negative. Let PP be the set of positive roots for this structure. Then there exists a unique chamber CC of RR such that P=R+(C)P = R_+(C).

Indeed, PP satisfies condition (ii) of Cor. 1.

This corollary applies in particular when the order being considered is total, the condition on RR then being automatically satisfied. Recall that such an order can be obtained, for example, by choosing a basis (ei)1≤i≤n(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of VV and taking the lexicographic order on VV, so x=∑iξieix = \sum_i \xi_i e_i is ≥0\geq 0 if all the ξi\xi_i are 0, or if ξi>0\xi_i > 0 for the smallest index ii such that ξi≠0\xi_i \neq 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
