Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

*Let P be a closed subset of R such that P∩(−P)=∅P \cap (-P) = \varnothing. Then there exists a chamber C of R such that P⊆R+(C)P \subseteq R_+(C).

1) In view of the Cor. of Th. 1, no. 3, the assumptions α∈P,β∈P,(α∣β)<0\alpha \in P, \beta \in P, (\alpha|\beta) < 0 imply that α+β∈P\alpha + \beta \in P.

2) We show that no sum α1+⋯+αq\alpha_1 + \cdots + \alpha_q (q⩾1q \geqslant 1) of elements of P is zero. We proceed by induction on qq. The assertion being clear for q=1q = 1, assume that q⩾2q \geqslant 2. If α1+⋯+αq=0\alpha_1 + \cdots + \alpha_q = 0, then

−α1=α2+⋯+αq, -\alpha_1 = \alpha_2 + \cdots + \alpha_q,

so (−α1∣α2+⋯+αq)>0(-\alpha_1|\alpha_2 + \cdots + \alpha_q) > 0, hence there exists j∈{2,q}j \in \{2, q\} such that (α1∣αj)<0(\alpha_1|\alpha_j) < 0. By part 1) of the proof, α1+αj∈P\alpha_1 + \alpha_j \in P, and the relation (α1+αj)+∑i≠1,jαi=0(\alpha_1 + \alpha_j) + \sum_{i \neq 1, j} \alpha_i = 0 contradicts the induction hypothesis.

3) We show that there exists a non-zero element γ\gamma in VV such that (γ∣α)⩾0(\gamma|\alpha) \geqslant 0 for all α∈P\alpha \in P. If not, the result of 1) would show that an infinite sequence α1,α2,…\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \ldots of elements of PP could be found such that

βi=α1+⋯+αi∈P \beta_i = \alpha_1 + \cdots + \alpha_i \in P
for all ii; there would exist two distinct integers i,ji, j such that βi=βj\beta_i = \beta_j, which would contradict the result of 2).

4) To prove the proposition, it is enough (Cor. 2 of Prop. 20) to show that there exists a basis (αk)1≤k≤l(\alpha_k)_{1 \leq k \leq l} of VV such that, for the lexicographic order defined by this basis, every element of PP is >0> 0. We proceed by induction on l=dim⁡Vl = \dim V, and assume that the proposition is established for all dimensions <l< l. Let γ∈V\gamma \in V be such that γ≠0\gamma \neq 0 and (γ∣α)⩾0(\gamma|\alpha) \geqslant 0 for all α∈P\alpha \in P (cf. 3)). Let LL be the hyperplane orthogonal to γ\gamma, and V′V' the subspace of LL generated by R∩LR \cap L. Then R∩LR \cap L is a root system in V′V' and P∩LP \cap L is closed in R∩LR \cap L. By the induction hypothesis, there exists a basis (β1,…,βl′)(\beta_1, \ldots, \beta_{l'}) of V′V' such that the elements of P∩LP \cap L are >0> 0 for the lexicographic order defined by this basis. Then any basis of VV whose first l′+1l' + 1 elements are γ,β1,…,βl′\gamma, \beta_1, \ldots, \beta_{l'} and whose remaining elements are in LL has the required property.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
