Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let ρ\rho be half the sum of the roots >0> 0.

(i) ρ=∑α∈Bω‾α\rho = \sum_{\alpha \in B} \overline{\omega}_\alpha; this is an element of CC. (ii) sα(ρ)=ρ−αs_\alpha(\rho) = \rho - \alpha for all α∈B\alpha \in B. (iii) (2ρ∣α)=(α∣α)(2\rho|\alpha) = (\alpha|\alpha) for all α∈B\alpha \in B.

Since RR is reduced, sα(R+(C)−{α})=R+(C)−{α}s_\alpha(R_+(C) - \{\alpha\}) = R_+(C) - \{\alpha\} and sα(α)=−αs_\alpha(\alpha) = -\alpha for α∈B\alpha \in B (no. 6, Cor. 1 of Prop. 17), so sα(2ρ)=2ρ−2αs_\alpha(2\rho) = 2\rho - 2\alpha. Since sα(ρ)=ρ−⟨ρ,α∨⟩s_\alpha(\rho) = \rho - \langle \rho, \alpha^\vee \rangle, we see that

⟨ρ,α∨⟩=1=⟨∑β∈Bω‾β,α∨⟩. \langle \rho, \alpha^\vee \rangle = 1 = \langle \sum_{\beta \in B} \overline{\omega}_\beta, \alpha^\vee \rangle.
Hence, ρ=∑βω‾β\rho = \sum_{\beta} \overline{\omega}_\beta, and consequently ρ∈C\rho \in C. Finally, (iii) is equivalent to ⟨ρ,α∨⟩=1\langle \rho, \alpha^\vee \rangle = 1.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
