Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 3. Exponential invariants

An element x∈A[P]x \in A[P] is said to be anti-invariant under WW if

w(x)=(−1)l(w).x w(x) = (-1)^{l(w)}.x
for all w∈Ww \in W.

The anti-invariant elements of A[P]A[P] form an AA-submodule of A[P]A[P]. For any x∈A[P]x \in A[P], put

J(x)=∑w∈Wε(w).w(x). J(x) = \sum_{w \in W} \varepsilon(w).w(x).
(1)

For x∈A[P]x \in A[P] and w∈Ww \in W, we have

w(J(x))=∑v∈Wε(v).wv(x)=ε(w)∑v∈Wε(v).v(x)=ε(w).J(x) w(J(x)) = \sum_{v \in W} \varepsilon(v).wv(x) = \varepsilon(w) \sum_{v \in W} \varepsilon(v).v(x) = \varepsilon(w).J(x)
and J(x)J(x) is anti-invariant. On the other hand, let q=Card(W)q = \mathrm{Card}(W). For any anti-invariant element xx of A[P]A[P], we have J(x)=q.xJ(x) = q.x. It follows that, if qq is invertible in AA, the map q−1Jq^{-1}J is a projection from A[P]A[P] onto the submodule of anti-invariant elements.

Let ω‾1,…,ω‾l\overline{\omega}_1, \ldots, \overline{\omega}_l be the fundamental weights corresponding to the chamber CC. The elements of P∩C‾P \cap \overline{C} (resp. P∩CP \cap C) are the weights of the form n1ω‾1+⋯+nlω‾ln_1 \overline{\omega}_1 + \cdots + n_l \overline{\omega}_l with ni≥0n_i \geq 0 (resp. ni>0n_i > 0) for 1≤i≤l1 \leq i \leq l (§ 1, no. 10). On the other hand,

ρ=ω‾1+⋯+ω‾l \rho = \overline{\omega}_1 + \cdots + \overline{\omega}_l
is half the sum of the positive roots (loc. cit.) so the elements of P∩CP \cap C are the weights of the form ρ+p\rho + p with p∈P∩C‾p \in P \cap \overline{C}. Finally, if p∈P∩Cp \in P \cap C, then w(p)<pw(p) < p for all w≠1w \neq 1 (§ 1, no. 6, Cor. to Prop. 18) and epe^p is thus the unique maximal term of J(ep)J(e^p).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
