General Topology, chapter I, § 5. Open mappings and closed mappings

Let (Xi)i∈I(X_i)_{i \in I} be a family of topological spaces, and for each i∈Ii \in I let RiR_i be an equivalence relation on XiX_i, and let fif_i be the canonical mapping Xi→Xi/RiX_i \to X_i/R_i. Let RR be the equivalence relation in X=∏i∈IXiX = \prod_{i \in I} X_i

"for each i∈Ii \in I, pr⁡i(x)=pr⁡i(y)\operatorname{pr}_i(x) = \operatorname{pr}_i(y) (mod RiR_i)"

between xx and yy, and let ff be the product mapping (xi)→(fi(xi))(x_i) \to (f_i(x_i)) of XX into ∏i∈I(Xi/Ri)\prod_{i \in I} (X_i/R_i). If each of the relations RiR_i is open, then the relation RR is open, and the bijection associated with ff is a homeomorphism of X/RX/R onto ∏i∈I(Xi/Ri)\prod_{i \in I} (X_i/R_i).

RR is the relation f(x)=f(y)f(x) = f(y). Since ff is continuous and open by Proposition 8 above and § 4, no. 1, Corollary 1 of Proposition 1, the result follows from Proposition 3 of no. 2.

In particular, if RR (resp. SS) is an open equivalence relation on a topological space XX (resp. YY), then the canonical bijection of

(X×Y)/(R×S)onto(X/R)×(Y/S) (X \times Y)/(R \times S) \quad \text{onto} \quad (X/R) \times (Y/S)

is a homeomorphism. If R and S are not assumed to be open, this bijection is continuous but is not necessarily a homeomorphism, even if one of the relations R, S is the relation of equality (Exercise 6).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
