General Topology, chapter I, § 6. Filters

Given two filters F,F′\mathfrak{F}, \mathfrak{F}' on the same set XX, F′\mathfrak{F}' is said to be finer than F\mathfrak{F}, or F\mathfrak{F} is coarser than F′\mathfrak{F}', if F⊂F′\mathfrak{F} \subset \mathfrak{F}'. If also F≠F′\mathfrak{F} \neq \mathfrak{F}', then F′\mathfrak{F}' is said to be strictly finer than F\mathfrak{F}, or F\mathfrak{F} strictly coarser than F′\mathfrak{F}'.

Two filters are said to be comparable if one is finer than the other. The set of all filters on XX is ordered by the relation " F\mathfrak{F} is coarser than F′\mathfrak{F}'"; this relation is induced by the inclusion relation in P(P(X))\mathfrak{P}(\mathfrak{P}(X)).

Let (Fi)i∈I(\mathfrak{F}_i)_{i \in I} be any non-empty family of filters on a set XX (which must therefore be non-empty); then the set

F=⋂i∈IFi \mathfrak{F} = \bigcap_{i \in I} \mathfrak{F}_i

satisfies axioms (FI),(FII)(F_I), (F_{II}) and (FIII)(F_{III}) and is therefore a filter; F\mathfrak{F} is called the intersection of the family of filters (Fi)i∈I(\mathfrak{F}_i)_{i \in I} and is obviously the greatest lower bound of the set of the Fi\mathfrak{F}_i in the ordered set of all filters on XX.

The filter formed by the single set XX is the smallest element of the ordered set of all filters on XX. We shall see in no. 4 that, if XX has more than one element, the set of all filters on XX has no greatest element.

Given a set G\mathfrak{G} of subsets of a set XX, let us consider whether there are any filters on XX which contain G\mathfrak{G}. If such a filter exists then by (FII)(F_{II}) it contains also the set G′\mathfrak{G}' of finite intersections of sets of G\mathfrak{G} (including XX, which is the intersection of the empty subset of G\mathfrak{G}); hence a necessary condition for such a filter to exist is that the empty subset of XX is not in G′\mathfrak{G}'. This condition is also sufficient, for by (FI)(F_I) any filter which contains G′\mathfrak{G}' also contains the set G′′\mathfrak{G}'' of subsets of XX which contain a set of G′\mathfrak{G}'. Now G′′\mathfrak{G}'' clearly satisfies (FI)(F_I); it satisfies (FII)(F_{II}) by reason of the definition of G′\mathfrak{G}'; and finally it satisfies (FIII)(F_{III}) because the empty subset of XX does not belong to G′\mathfrak{G}'. Hence G′′\mathfrak{G}'' is the coarsest filter which contains G\mathfrak{G}, and we have proved:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
