General Topology, chapter I, § 11. Connectedness

Let XX be a topological space and RR an equivalence relation on XX. If the quotient space X/RX/R is connected, and if each equivalence class mod RR is connected, then XX is connected.

Suppose XX is not connected. Then there is a partition of XX into two open sets A,BA, B. The sets A,BA, B are saturated with respect to RR; for if x∈Ax \in A then the equivalence class MM of xx cannot meet BB, otherwise the sets A∩M,B∩MA \cap M, B \cap M would form a partition of MM into two sets open in MM, which is impossible since MM is connected. The canonical images of AA and BB are therefore open sets in X/RX/R and form a partition of X/RX/R; this contradicts the assumption that X/RX/R is connected.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
