General Topology, chapter II, § 1. Uniform spaces

Let XX be a uniform space. For every symmetric entourage VV of XX and every subset MM of X×XX \times X, VMVVMV is a neighbourhood of MM in the product space X×XX \times X, and the closure of MM in this space is given by the formula

M‾=⋂V∈SVMV \overline{M} = \bigcap_{V \in \mathscr{S}} VMV

where S\mathscr{S} denotes the set of symmetric entourages of XX.

Let VV be a symmetric entourage of XX. The relation (x,y)∈VMV(x, y) \in VMV means that there is an element (p,q)(p, q) of MM such that (x,p)∈V(x, p) \in V and (q,y)∈V(q, y) \in V: in other words (VV being symmetric) x∈V(p)x \in V(p) and y∈V(q)y \in V(q), that is (x,y)∈V(p)×V(q)(x, y) \in V(p) \times V(q). Since V(p)×X(q)V(p) \times X(q) is a neighbourhood of (p,q)(p, q) in X×XX \times X, the first part of the proposition is proved. The relations (x,p)∈V,(y,q)∈V(x, p) \in V, (y, q) \in V can also be written p∈V(x),q∈V(y)p \in V(x), q \in V(y) or (p,q)∈V(x)×V(y)(p, q) \in V(x) \times V(y). As VV runs through S\mathscr{S}, the sets V(x)×V(y)V(x) \times V(y) form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of (x,y)(x, y) in X×XX \times X; for if U,U′U, U' are any two entourages there is always a symmetric entourage V⊂U∩U′V \subset U \cap U', so that V(x)×V(y)⊂U(x)×U′(y)V(x) \times V(y) \subset U(x) \times U'(y). Hence V(x)×V(y)V(x) \times V(y) meets MM for each V∈SV \in \mathscr{S} if and only if (x,y)∈M‾(x, y) \in \overline{M}, and formula (1) follows.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
