General Topology, chapter II, § 4. Relations between uniform spaces and compact spaces
A uniform space is precompact if and only if, for each entourage of , there is a finite covering of by -small sets.
We may express this condition more intuitively by saying that can be covered by a finite number of sets which are as small as we please.
Let be the canonical mapping, then the entourages of are the inverse images under of the entourages of (§ 3, no. 7, Proposition 12). Suppose is precompact, and let be any entourage of ; then there is a symmetric entourage of such that . Since is compact, there exist a finite number of points such that the (which are -small) cover . If is the inverse image of by , the sets are -small and cover . Conversely, suppose that for each entourage of there is a finite covering of by -small sets. We have to show that every ultrafilter on is convergent; since is complete, it is enough to show that is a Cauchy filter, i.e. that for each closed entourage of there is a -small set in (§ 1, no. 2, Proposition 2, Corollary 2). Let be the inverse image of under , and let be a finite covering of by -small sets; then the sets are -small and cover , so that
